Cage

Holy flaming moose!

We've been up on the Nic Cage tip for years but it seems only as his iguanashit-insane performance in Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans is about to be released in theaters that he is getting the kind of ink he deserves. There's NYTimes' piece in which Manohla Dargis grudgingly admits to Cage's genius (despite not having seen either National Treasures), NYMag's frame-worthy pdf on the life of Cage (including personal motto: Maximum Violence Immediately), and even a Village Voice article that basically reports on the other two articles.

Now it turns out that Cage is actually a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador on Drugs and Crime, and was sent on a mission to a Kenyan prison to hear the Somali priates' side of the story. Makes sense.

The accompanying pictures beg the question:

I'm really glad you pointed out the different ways that we might identify and draw from theory. For me it speaks also to the false dichotomy that we set up between theory and practice. There is reading theory, and I think we should have a broader mix of where to look for these conceptual sources that can inform our work. And as we broaden, I'd like to think we eventually can arrive at a place where strong lines between things like theory and its object get wiped out. I get that some texts try to be more meta than others, that some writing is about writing/knowledge/language, etc. But I also think that some texts enact theory in ways that are equally compelling and that we can look to them to inform our thinking as well.

I guess I would want to extend this blurring of lines to theory and practice as well. I know that I theorize when I imagine a class assignment, attend a meeting, or brainstorm the shape of a Web site. Of course, this might not be of any help when it comes to the challenges of having too much ground to cover. If everything can be theoretical, then we'll always be reading (and doing) theory, which I suppose speaks to Pat's point about having an awareness of and helping others to see that process.
