Fuck the Working Week - Apr. 21, 2006

The original title was going to be "Welcome to the Working Week," but as the current title implies, fuck that.

The Man
1. Horace Andy: "Money, Money (The Root of All Evil)" (Skylarking)
Horace, how about you start things up by kicking it root down?

2. Neil Young: "Vampire Blues" (On the Beach)
This is an absolutely amazing song to pop on first when you walk out the door in the a.m. Especially if you're like me and like to wake up thinking about how oil men are runnin' this shit.

3, Gang of Four: "Not Great Men" (Entertainment!)
I think Gang of Four was trying to tell me I'm a great man, and the people running things aren't. I may have ego problems.

Getting a Job
4. The Smiths: "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" (Hatful of Hollow)
"I was looking for a job, and then I found a job..."

5. Elvis Costello: "Welcome to the Working Week" (My Aim is True)
A lot of My Aim Is True could be on this mix, because The News are the ultimate working-class band.

6. Talking Heads: "Found a Job" (More Songs About Buildings and Food)
If anyone wants to read my pilot script, give me a shout out.

Working... and Hating It
7. XTC: "Making Plans for Nigel" (Drums and Wires)
Oh Nigel, won't you just grow a backbone and quit British Steel?

8. Pulp: "Common People" (Different Class)
You want to live like "common" people? Go fuck yourself.

9. Sam Cooke: "Chain Gang" (The Man and His Music)
Sunny day + mid-week + you slacking off + walking around in an area with lots of people at work and/or dressed in suits + this song on your headphones = perfect.

10. The Clash: "Janie Jones" (The Clash)
The Clash have about fifty songs that would make sense on this mix - this one makes the most sense.

11. The Smiths: "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" (The Queen is Dead)
This is the ultimate song about a shitty job.

The Joy of Quitting
12. Queen: "I Want to Break Free" (The Works)
This is a love song. But if you're not inspired by Freddie screaming "I Want to Break Free!", you're soulless.

13. David Bowie: "A New Career in a New Town" (Low)
An excerpt from a conversation in Berlin, circa 1976:
Brian Eno: David, I just wrote this fucking great tune.
David Bowie: Excellent... now rephrase that sentence so it sounds like I wrote it.

14. Michael Jackson: "Off the Wall" (Off the Wall)
Live life off the wall.

So you think I left something out? Your favorite Clash song not on this list? "Richard Corey" by Simon & Garfunkel? Loverboy's classic, "Working for the Weekend"?
