For a third straight week, PENGUINS will reign supreme at the box office... unless Jesus is as big as some people seem to think he is. I don't know about you but as soon as I saw that movie Thirteen, I was all "This is the filmmaker who can finally tackle the birth of our saviour." And then I got slapped in the face by my BFF and did a line of heroin off a cross.
The more you know.

NOTHING. Take a break. Hollywood doesn't deserve your money this weekend. Nor does Indiewood. If you must, pop in that Netflix movie that's been sitting by your bedside for the last three months. Otherwise, ask someone on a date or go for a walk.

I'm new to this box office speculation business so I didn't get my shit together by Wednesday, which was when I should have posted for this long Thanksgiving weekend. Excuse me. It will never happen again.
As families look to go to the movies together this weekend, there will be one clear winner and he won't be human. Happy Feet should really succeed in giving the American people some deja vu this weekend, making us think, "Didn't I just see this movie last weekend?" and also, "I liked this better when it was a glorified PBS documentary."
Bond and Denzel will compete for the same auds this weekend, though I suspect Bond will do better with white girls and Mr. Washington will bring in the sisters. Men will be split, not by race, but by whether or not they saw Bond last weekend and how many times.
Predix:
1. Happy Feet - $37M
2. Deja Vu - $32M
3. Casino Royale - $29M
4. Deck the Halls - $11M

Too many movies open this weekend. And the New York Times liked all of them. Well, almost all of them. Emilio Estevez's Bobby was politely dismissed despite it's askin' for a beatin'.
Bond is back, as is animated Robin Williams who last appeared as a cartoon in Man of the Year.
Keep it up, Borat!

Impossible.
Too many movies open or expand this weekend to really know what's going to happen. Borat will certainly be #1 again, now on a shit ton more screens. Stranger than Fiction will do some business off a strong trailer and Ferrell's popularity, but I think will disappoint in the long run. Can A Good Year restore the reputation of middle-brow prestige, recently trashed by All the King's Men (as well as Cinderella Man last year)? Hopefully not. Babel should have little trouble exploding this weekend. And then there's some horror film that looks like it might be the third Grudge movie, as well as another Christian Bale movie.
Shit is crowded.
Predix:
1. Borat - $23mil
2. Stranger than Fiction - $16mil
3. A Good Year - $11mil
4. Santa Clause - $10mil

This weekend, a new movie star, Borat, will go up against an old movie star, Santa Clause. And despite the popular and critical excitement over the former, it is the latter who will triumph. It's not exactly a fair race since Santa Clause 3 is opening on over 3,000 screens while Borat is opening on just 800. Not to mention the fact that one brings gifts and Christmastime cheer, while the other brings sophisticated satire. Come to think of it, this isn't really much of a race at all. Other mediocre films will come in ahead of Borat as well. But they will last a weekend. Borat will live forever.

Very little competition in the wide release circuit this weekend. Catch a Fire, a thoughtful and classily-directed film from the underrated genre director Phillip Noyce, will be torn to shreds by the thoughtless and decidedly un-classy Saw III. Prestige, Departed, and Flags should hold pretty strong, even as platforms like Running with Scissors and Babel cut into their biz.
Predix:
1. Saw III - $29mil
2. Prestige - $10mil
3. Departed - $9mil
4. Flags - $7.5mil
5. Open Season - $5.5mil

8. Catch a Fire - $3.5mil
9. Running with Scissors - $3.2mil
10. Grudge 2 - $3mil
Nightmare 3D could sneak in that last spot.
Platform Predix:
Babel is going to do monstrously well - say, $300k in 7 theaters.

Can you believe how aggressive those Grudge 2 commercials are? I am continually taken aback by how receptive mainstream audiences are to unpleasantness in the form of horror movies. The very same audiences who groan with physical discomfort when two men kiss on-screen, pop erections as they watch abuse-victims' finger nails get yanked out with pliers. What the hell.
Also, new rule: Robin Williams has run out of professions to cheer up. So stop letting him make new movies.

Marty should have his best opening of all time this weekend, due to a lineup of stars that satisfies the testosterone-prone and the hunk-lusty, the young starry-eyed and the Jack-nostalgics, the widespread genre buffs and the Scorsese connoisseurs. Everyone should be seeing The Departed this weekend.
Except for those who have been dying to know how Leatherface made his mask before he killed those kids in 1974. I just know that everyone who sees The Beginning this weekend has been waiting to know for the last 32 years.

Okay so last weekend I was a little off. Most notably, All the King's Men tanked, thus proving Jude Law really isn't a movie star, just like the prophet Chris Rock said.
Or maybe the lesson here is that prestige fare needs to be rolled out platform style, which is what two new movies will begin to do this weekend: The Last King of Scotland and The Queen. Look for The Queen to show up on the Top Ten some time around January when the Oscar noms are released.
In the mean time, this is what we're left with...
Predix:
1. Open Season - $20mil
2. Jackass - $17mil
3. Guardian - $15mil

7. Flyboys - $3mil
8. Illusionist - $3mil
9. Everyone's Hero - $2.8mil
10. Little Miss Sunshine - $2.5mil
Or maybe All the King's Men will sneak in there with $2.5 or so.
